A Download Manager/Accelerator is a must-have tool for every internet user. There are many download managers and (so called) accelerators for Windows that promise to improve download speeds by 200% etc. But, very few download managers live up to their promise and Speedbit’s Download Accelerator Plus is one such download manager. DAP has been accelerating downloads for a very long time and more than 230 million users trust it. So, through this review you’ll know why DAP has become so famous and what features makes it stand out from the crowd.

Installation :

DAP InstallationThe installer of DAP not just installs the application but it will also promote other Speedbit products. If you want to install DAP only, then keep an eye on installation. If not, you may end up installing other products, toolbars, changed search engine settings of your web browser etc.

Interface and Configuration :

DAP InterfaceInterface of DAP is clear and easy to understand. All your downloads will be organized in two different ways.

  1. According to download status.
  2. According to category.

Category view will make it easy to browse the required downloaded file quickly.

DAP OptionsNot only that, DAP will offer so many options to the user so that he can customize it accordingly. Using these Options (Tools > Options) you can :

  • Select the desired mode of acceleration from available modes i.e. Normal mode, Above Normal mode, Accelerated mode, Broadband Optimization, High Accelerated Speed etc.
  • Set number of simultaneous downloads.
  • Create or edit categories to organize downloaded files into folders with respective categories as the folder names.
  • You can exclude certain file types, which you don’t want to download with DAP.
  • Scan downloaded files with your antivirus.
  • Schedule downloads and many more.

Security :

Most of the malware spreads from internet and it is very important to scan the downloaded files before using them. But, with DAP you don’t need that extra effort to scan them manually.  DAP analyzes the downloaded files with it’s unique Multi Antivirus technology (that includes renowned antiviruses like Kaspersky, Avira, NOD32, AVG, Avast etc). So, with that many best antiviruses on the list, it’s tough for malware to escape from DAP.

Other Features :

DAP comes with in-built internet browser and FTP browser. But they are not complete alternatives to such standalone applications. Their functionality is limited. For example, with FTP Browser, you can only browse and download the files from your server but you cannot upload files using DAP.

Making Use of DAP (Save Online Radio Streams etc) :

Number of features of a software doesn’t matter if the end user fails to utilize them. DAP is not just an ordinary download manager. It has so many powerful features and all you have to know is how to make use of them. So, we thought to give few usability tips on how to get the most out of DAP.

Save Online Radio Streams :

Many online radio stations (like xiph.org directory) gives .M3U playlists to users so that they can tune-in using their favorite media player. Usually what we do is, we open that .M3U with a media player like Winamp, iTunes etc and we’ll listen to the radio station. Now, let us see what happens if if open that .M3U file with DAP :

  1. To import .M3U file into DAP, go to File > Import > M3U playlist and then browse for .M3U playlist.
  2. Now, DAP will analyze that M3U playlist and it’ll list all the streams of that radio station.Download Online Radio Streams with DAP
  3. Just, select the songs you wish to save or use select all to download all radio streams.

I’ve just shown you a way to make use of DAP. There is so much to explore in DAP. The premium version unlocks more features like Private downloads, Extreme Acceleration, preview zip files even before they are downloaded etc. So, download DAP today and explore the end-less opportunities.

Cloud storage and services these days are being the normal and everyday some new service comes online with never before heard freebies for the users. Today we will talk about two services Beecloud and Backify which are offering you 512 GB of free online cloud storage. Both these services offer 512 GB of cloud storage to users for free with almost similar service.

Honestly, the amount of Free storage offered looks too good to be true. To use these services, you need to follow a similar procedure. First create an account. After that just download the software and install it on your system. Now using that tool you can choose which files and folders you want to back up. The tool will automatically starts uploading your data in the background to servers. It keeps monitoring your files and as soon as you change a file, it is backed up automatically.

One of the limiting factors here is that you can use the free 512 GB space to backup files only from one system.

We digged a bit and found out that these services look out to be Resellers of LiveDrive Internet which offers unlimited Backup and Custom branding for just $59.95 per month. BeeCloud does state that they are resellers of Livedrive, but we were unable to find that reference on Backify.

We went through the TOS of these services to find if everything is all right. The following clause from Backify TOS may be a cause of worry for many.

By using the facilities of the Backify Services to make Content available to other Users (“Shared Content”): you grant to Backify a limited license to use, modify, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce, and distribute your Shared Content on and through the Backify Services. The license you grant to Backify is non-exclusive, perpetual, fully-paid and royalty-free, sub-licensable, and worldwide; you represent and warrant that you own the Shared Content or otherwise have the right to grant the license set forth in this section;

Even though Encryption of data stored is mentioned a bit and that it cant be accessed by them. its not so clear how its done. Also, as we stated above, they are just resellers we cant be sure of how the TOS applies in typical cases of privacy.

Conclusion

You can avoid these services to back and store such data which does not have any critical information stored &  even if gets lost just in case, you should not get worried. IF you want to store any critical data, then we dont advise you to store it here. There are many better services already there to do that.

Cast your mind back a few years and the words “Internet Explorer” may have leapt instantly to mind when you thought of which browser to use on your desktop.

Nowadays though, Google has entered the browser market and made the fight really about Chrome versus Firefox.

Despite IE still claiming a 51.8 percent browser market share according to research firm Net Applications, rival browsers are gaining ground. Firefox currently has 21.1 percent, Chrome 14.5 percent, Safari 7.7 percent and Opera 2.9 percent market share.

Naturally, some of you may already have your preferred browser and reckon you’ll stick with it no matter what. But with the browser wars heating up and more of us relying heavily on the internet to perform our jobs and daily tasks, having the right browser for our needs is vital.

So in a head-to-head battle which browser wins: Firefox or Chrome?

Security

Chrome has the edge here thanks to its ability to run each tab as a separate process. This ensures each tab is kept individual and means should one become infected by faulty code, only that tab closes rather than the whole browser. (If it’s never happened to you, trust me you’ll really appreciate not losing all your open tabs in one unfortunate moment!)

This helps to keep your PC more secure by containing the malware.

Stability

Chrome is the most compatible browser as it works on Windows, Mac and Linux-based operating systems. This compares to Firefox which works well on Windows and Mac-based platforms but can struggle on Linux.

Chrome also has a function inbuilt in the task manager that lets you see how much memory each tab is using so you can manage them more effectively.

Speed

Both Firefox and Chrome are renowned for being fast browsers, although Chrome takes the lead as the fastest. This is because of neat features like predicting the address you’re typing before you’ve typed it; and although Firefox 4 is far quicker it still tends to run more add-ons which slows the average machine down.

Design

The minimalist look is a design feature of both these browsers, with clean and user-friendly layouts. Tabs are simply laid out on top of the address bar, making the experience spacious and visually pleasing.

Features

When it comes to features, the browser you prefer will depend on your personal tastes.

For example, Chrome has a smart way of syncing bookmarks which means you can view your bookmarked sites on different PCs. Simply log in to your Google account on any computer with Chrome installed for this option to work.

Firefox has the App Tabs and Tab Groups functions for organising open pages effortlessly and neatly, keeping the desktop clutter-free.

Verdict

There’s a good reason Firefox and Chrome tend to be regarded as the key players in the browser wars – they are fast, secure and user friendly. Personally, I rate Chrome higher than Firefox as it is faster and does everything I want it to do without making a fuss.

If you’ve not tried both, it’d be a good idea to do so. That way, you can find the browser that supports your surfing style the best.
