Windows 11 point-in-time restore is a full-system rollback that most people have switched on without knowing it. If a driver, an app or a Windows update breaks your PC, it can put the machine back to exactly the state it was in yesterday — operating system, installed apps, settings and your local files — in minutes rather than hours, Microsoft says, and it works even when Windows will not boot. We covered it briefly when it arrived as the headline feature of the July 2026 Windows 11 update; this is the full guide to living with it.
It is not System Restore, and it is not a backup. It has one strict limit that decides whether it will help you: restore points only live for 72 hours. Here is how it actually works, how to check yours is on, and how to use it when something goes wrong.

What Windows 11 point-in-time restore actually does
Windows quietly takes a snapshot of your whole system drive on a schedule — by default about every 24 hours — using the same Volume Shadow Copy Service that has powered Windows backups for years. The snapshots sit on your own disk, not in the cloud.
What is inside a restore point, per Microsoft’s documentation, is the important part: the Windows OS, installed applications, system and app configuration, settings, and local user files. Nothing is scoped out. That is the difference from the old System Restore, which touches system files and settings but leaves your personal files alone.
Announcing general availability on 23 June 2026, Microsoft said the release reflects what it has heard consistently from Windows users and IT admins:
recovery should be reliable, simple, and easy to use when it matters most
The blog also says the feature had been enabled on over 2 million devices during preview before it went GA. It is available on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, across the Home, Pro and Enterprise editions.
Is it already on for you?
Probably, if you bought a normal consumer laptop. Microsoft turns point-in-time restore on by default on:
- Windows 11 Home devices
- Windows 11 Pro devices that are not domain joined and not enrolled in enterprise endpoint management
It is off by default on Windows Enterprise and Education machines, and on Pro devices managed by an organisation — that changes with Windows 11 version 26H2, when it flips on for those too. One more catch: the default-on behaviour only applies if your Windows drive is 200 GB or larger. On a 128 GB budget laptop the feature exists but is off, and you have to enable it yourself.
How to check or change point-in-time restore settings
Only a local administrator can view or edit these settings. From Microsoft’s own instructions:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery > Point-in-time restore.
- Select View or edit.
- Select Yes on the User Account Control prompt. The point-in-time restore settings window opens.
- To enable it, turn the toggle to On.
- Use the slider to adjust the maximum disk space restore points may use.
The same screen shows how much disk space your restore points are currently using and lists the restore points on the system with their timestamps. You can also list or delete restore points from the command line with vssadmin.
Note what you cannot change if you are on Home or Pro: the frequency dropdown (options are 4, 6, 12, 16 or 24 hours) and the retention dropdown (4, 6, 12, 16, 24 or 72 hours) are Enterprise only. Consumers get 24-hour snapshots and 72-hour retention, take it or leave it.
How much disk does it eat?
The default cap is 2% of the disk, with a floor of 2 GB and a ceiling equivalent to 50 GB. That space is not pre-allocated — it is an upper bound, and unused capacity stays available to Windows. Restore points are also folded into Windows’ reserved storage, the slice already set aside for updates, which is why the visible hit is smaller than the numbers suggest. Restore points are deleted oldest-first when they pass 72 hours, when the VSS limit is hit, or when free disk space drops to 20 GB or less.
How to restore your PC to an earlier point
You cannot trigger a restore from inside Windows. It runs only from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), which is deliberate — it is the path that still works when the PC will not start.
- Get into WinRE. Windows enters it automatically after repeated boot failures, or you can go to Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup and restart.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Point-in-time restore.
- Enter your BitLocker recovery key if prompted. On an encrypted drive this is mandatory — find it now, not later.
- Select a restore point from the list of dates and times.
- Select Continue to acknowledge the risks and limitations.
- Review the restore point, the OS version and the data-loss warning, then select Restore.
The PC restarts into Windows when it finishes. Microsoft’s two rules during a restore: do not power the device off, and plug it into mains power first. A restore that loses power partway can leave the machine unbootable.
What you lose, and the limits worth knowing
This is a full rollback, so everything created after the restore point goes — files, app installs, settings changes, saved passwords, certificates and keys. Files stored in OneDrive are not affected, though they may need to resync. Only the drive Windows is installed on is restored; other drives are untouched.
The rest of the fine print, in brief:
- Free space: you need at least as much free space as the total size of all restore points on the system, or the restore fails.
- Security updates: a restore can revert recent patches. Run Windows Update immediately afterwards.
- Editions: restore points taken on one Windows edition are unusable after an edition change. Upgrade Home to Pro and your Home restore points are gone.
- EFS: using Encrypting File System files prevents restoration.
- No export: restore points cannot be exported or mounted as disk images.
- Known issues: Outlook may complain about an .ost mismatch (close Outlook, delete or rename the .ost in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook, reopen and let it rebuild). Recall is disabled after a restore and needs re-enabling. Volumes encrypted after the snapshot lose auto-unlock and need the recovery key.
Useful, but do not mistake it for a backup
The 72-hour ceiling is the whole story here. Point-in-time restore is excellent at the specific job of undoing a bad Tuesday — a driver, a botched app install, an update that shuts your machine down, which is not hypothetical given the July update that Microsoft had to block on certain Dell PCs. It is useless for anything you notice a week later, and it protects nothing against a dead SSD or a stolen laptop, because the snapshots live on the same disk.
It is also worth being clear-eyed about the consumer version of this feature. Home and Pro users get the schedule Microsoft chose, with no way to lengthen retention past three days — the dials exist, they are just reserved for Enterprise. And Microsoft’s own advice alongside a data-loss warning is to keep your data in the cloud, which in practice means OneDrive. A local rollback tool that quietly argues for a subscription is doing two jobs at once. Treat point-in-time restore as a fast undo button, keep a real backup on a separate drive, and know where your BitLocker key is before you need it.
