The wait is over for the small group of Dell owners left stuck last week. Microsoft has shipped KB5121767, an out-of-band emergency update released on July 18, 2026, that clears the driver conflict behind the unexpected shutdowns and overheating on certain Dell PCs. This is the fix promised alongside Microsoft’s original hold on the update, and it restores those machines to the July security rollup they were held back from.

The most important thing first: almost nobody needs to act on this. If your Dell was never affected, or you don’t own one of the high-end models listed below, the update simply isn’t for you. In Microsoft’s own words on the KB5121767 support page, “If your device is not affected, no action is required.” Non-Dell readers can stop here.

What KB5121767 fixes and who needs the Windows 11 Dell update

Back on July 14, Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday update KB5101650 (OS builds 26100.8875 for Windows 11 24H2 and 26200.8875 for 25H2) fixed a record 570 security flaws. But on a limited set of Dell machines it triggered unexpected shutdowns, overheating, poor performance and faster battery drain, so Microsoft blocked it while it worked with Dell and Intel. We covered the root cause — a clash between a new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface and Intel’s Innovation Platform Framework (IPF) “Processor Participant” driver — in the earlier post.

KB5121767 is the resolution. Microsoft describes it as addressing “an issue affecting a limited number of devices with an Intel Innovation Platform Framework (Intel IPF) driver that could cause changes in performance, power consumption, or system behavior after installing recent Windows updates,” specifically for the Dell devices previously held back from KB5101650. It lands as OS Build 26100.8894 on Windows 11 24H2 and 26200.8894 on 25H2. Because it’s cumulative, you don’t need any earlier update installed first.

The affected Dell models

Microsoft’s KB text doesn’t name the hardware, but the list has since surfaced. These are workstation-class and XPS 17 machines, not mainstream laptops — so ordinary Inspiron, Latitude and XPS 13/15 owners are very unlikely to be in scope:

  • Dell Pro Max 14 Premium (MA14250) and Pro Max 16 Premium (MA16250)
  • Dell Pro Precision 7 14 (PW714260) and Pro Precision 7 16 (PW716260)
  • Dell Precision 5470, 5480, 5490 and 5770
  • Dell XPS 17 9720 and 9730

How to get KB5121767

If you’re on one of those Dell models, here’s how the update reaches you:

  1. If “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” is turned on under Settings > Windows Update, KB5121767 installs automatically.
  2. If that toggle is off, open Settings > Windows Update and select Download & Install.
  3. It’s also available for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog, and IT admins can deploy it through WSUS.

That’s the whole story: a targeted fix for a targeted problem. If you were one of the Dell workstation owners waiting since last week, your July security update — and normal power and thermal behaviour — should now be back to normal. Everyone else can carry on as usual.
