Microsoft will hold a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on October 7. It is the company’s first major Windows event since May 2024. Satya Nadella, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri are all confirmed to attend. That’s according to Microsoft’s own event invite, reported by Engadget on September 15.
What Microsoft says the event covers
Microsoft frames the event around “how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC.” Per the invite line reported by Engadget, the three executives are expected to cover Windows, Nvidia RTX Spark, Surface, and the broader PC ecosystem.
That combination of names points squarely at one product: the Surface Laptop Ultra. Microsoft first showed it at Computex in June, built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip. RTX Spark pairs an Arm-based Grace CPU with a Blackwell RTX GPU. Microsoft has already detailed the laptop’s design, its up to 128GB of unified memory, and its MiniLED display. What it hasn’t said since June is when the laptop ships or what it costs. An October event with Nadella, Huang and Davuluri together on stage is the most plausible place for that to change. Why this event is notable
Microsoft has not held a dedicated Windows-branded event of this size in over two years. Despite the Windows name on the invite, don’t expect a new operating system. Microsoft said in May that Windows 12 is not on the roadmap. The messaging here is about local AI hardware and Windows 11 running on it, not a new version number.
The event lands three weeks after this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle. That update needed an emergency out-of-band fix just to stabilize Remote Desktop and USB audio. Microsoft’s pitch on October 7 is about the next generation of AI-capable PCs. It comes weeks after the current generation’s own update pipeline needed cleanup.
Worth watching, worth doubting
Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra in June without a price or a ship date. Four months later, buyers still have neither. An event built around the next chapter of the PC is also, plainly, a sales pitch for hardware nobody can buy yet. A second announcement without a price or a date would mean buyers are still waiting after two launches.
Microsoft hasn’t said whether the event will stream publicly. It also hasn’t confirmed India availability or pricing for anything shown. The event is scheduled for 10am Pacific time on October 7, which is 10:30pm IST the same day.
