Windows 11 26H2 reached the Release Preview Channel on 27 August 2026, as build 26300.9278. That is the last stop before a feature update ships as a normal Windows Update, and it is the milestone the rest of this year’s rollout hangs on. Microsoft says general availability will follow later this calendar year.

We covered which PCs get 26H2 and which are stuck earlier this month, and none of that eligibility picture changes here — this is the schedule moving, not the rules.

What Windows 11 26H2 actually switches on

Because 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share a servicing branch, most of 26H2’s code is already sitting on your PC, delivered inside ordinary monthly updates and switched off. Microsoft’s own framing is that many of the features may already be familiar. The concrete revision numbers make the point: this week’s optional update for 24H2 and 25H2 is builds 26100.9278 and 26200.9278, and 26H2 is 26300.9278. Same revision, different branch number.

The one group getting a real content change is managed business PCs. Microsoft’s post says 26H2 “enables several experiences that were introduced in earlier releases but not previously enabled by default for commercial devices”:

  • Windows settings backup — the sync-your-settings-to-your-Microsoft-account feature.
  • App-specific actions from the taskbar — Microsoft’s post does not describe these further.
  • Some File Explorer enhancements — Microsoft does not itemise which ones.

Worth naming what that means for a work laptop: Microsoft’s wording is that settings backup becomes enabled by default on these devices, and settings backup is a feature that syncs to a Microsoft account. It is arriving on machines whose users did not ask for it. If you are on a managed machine, check Settings > Accounts > Windows backup after the upgrade rather than assuming the default is the one you want.

How to get it, and whether you should

Release Preview Insiders on a PC that meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements can pull 26H2 through the “seeker” experience: go to Settings > Windows Update and choose to download and install it. Microsoft says ISOs will follow on the Windows Insider ISO download page in the near term, and Azure Marketplace images were due the same day.

For everyone else, waiting costs most people nothing. But one date does matter: Microsoft’s footnote confirms Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of updates on 13 October 2026, with Enterprise and Education supported until 12 October 2027. If you are on 24H2 Home or Pro, you need to be on a newer version before that date, and 26H2’s general availability is currently the thing you would be waiting for.
