An OLED iPad mini is reportedly close to launch. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, writing on July 16, 2026, Apple is preparing a redesigned iPad mini with the tablet’s first-ever OLED display, targeted for release by October 2026. Treat all of this as a report, not fact: nothing below is confirmed by Apple, and everything comes from Gurman’s reporting, echoed by MacRumors and GSMArena rather than independently verified.

If the timeline holds, it would be the iPad mini’s biggest overhaul since the current design arrived in 2021. The most recent refresh, the 2024 “iPad mini 7,” kept that same body, so a genuine redesign with a new screen would be a notable change for anyone who likes Apple’s smallest tablet.

What the OLED iPad mini reportedly changes

The headline change in this week’s report is the screen and the chip. Reportedly:

  • Display: an 8.4-inch OLED panel (described by some reports as a hybrid OLED/LTPS panel), but capped at a 60Hz refresh rate. That means no ProMotion — the smooth, high-refresh-rate scrolling on Apple’s pricier iPads. A better panel type without ProMotion is a real caveat, not a clean win.
  • Chip: uncertain. Reports point to Apple’s A19 Pro (the chip from the iPhone 17 Pro), though some hedge it could be an A20-series part depending on exactly when it ships. Neither is settled.
  • Codename: J510.

Separately — and reported earlier, not new this week — the redesign is said to add Face ID, improved water resistance closer to iPhone-level sealing, and a new vibration-based speaker system. Worth flagging that those are older rumors folded into the same story, not fresh confirmation.

Price: a nicer screen, but likely a higher bill

There is no official price. The current iPad mini (2024) starts at $599 in the US and ₹69,900 in India for the 128GB Wi-Fi model, verified on apple.com/in. Because OLED panels cost more to make than the current LCD, both MacRumors and GSMArena expect the next model to start above that figure. So the realistic picture is a better screen type, minus ProMotion, at a higher price — a mixed bag for the money rather than a straightforward upgrade.

What’s next after that: Apple’s 2027 iPad roadmap

The same report sketches out 2027. This is further out and less certain, so weight it accordingly:

  • Base iPad (J581): targeted for Q1 2027 (Jan–Mar). Gets a processor bump — reportedly an A18 or A19-class chip, up from today’s A16 — but keeps its LCD screen and current design. No OLED, no redesign.
  • iPad Air (11-inch J807, 13-inch J837): expected spring 2027. Whether these move to OLED is unclear; Apple is said to be working on an eventual OLED Air, but it’s not clear it arrives with this refresh.
  • iPad Pro: also expected to be refreshed in spring 2027, alongside the Airs. No further details available.
  • New Apple Pencil: expected around the same spring 2027 window, reportedly with a replaceable battery. This detail is more loosely sourced than the rest.

Should you buy the current iPad mini now or wait for the OLED iPad mini?

For Indian buyers, the practical question is timing. If you need an iPad mini now, the 2024 model at ₹69,900 is still a fine buy and does everything it did last week. If you can wait, note that even a US launch “by October 2026” usually means a later India rollout — realistically around October–November or beyond — and the payoff is a nicer screen and Face ID, likely at a higher price and still without ProMotion.

One honest caveat before you hold your money: none of this is official. Apple has changed and delayed iPad mini plans before, so a report — however reliable the reporter — is not a promise. Wait only if you’re comfortable that the timeline or the details could shift.
