How often you get a error that page cannot be displayed when you try to open a webpage. I think its too often. Even with a good quality website sometime when you try to open gives you this error page. When we refresh tha page , the site opens. We think its the site that is having problem. But its other way.

open-dns-1The real culprit many times is your ISP DNS servers which are used for resolving DNS (Domain Name System) for the websites leading to cannot display pages for webpages. So its the DNS servers of Your ISP making your webpages load slower.

So whats the solution. Is there any??? Perhaps we have a solution in the form of OpenDNS. OpenDNS offers DNS resolution for you as an alternative to  Internet service provider‘s DNS servers and that too for free.

As per OpenDNS own website :

OpenDNS is the leading provider of free security and infrastructure services that make the Internet safer through integrated Web content filtering, anti-phishing and DNS. OpenDNS services enable consumers and network administrators to secure their networks from online threats, reduce costs and enforce Internet-use policies. OpenDNS is used today by millions of users and organizations around the world.

Its a free service for everyone including home user and enterprise ones. So some of you may ask, why use openDNS ? Here’s some of the reasons. Take a look

  • Protection from anti-phishing and fraudulent phishing scams.
  • Web content filtering to block up to 50 categories of content.
  • Globally distributed network makes Web sites load faster on your network.
  • Anycast routing technology makes your Internet more reliable, freeing you of intermittent outages.
  • Browser Shortcuts let your users map a short term to a long URL via the address bar.
  • Typo correction auto-corrects the most common typos in top-level domains.

One thing that helps OpenDNS earn some money is thru the pages that open when you type something which doesn’t exist. Its like ads on parked domains / pages. That seems fine as we all know these days we see loads of ads on non existing webpages.

If you want to change to openDNS , you just need to change your DNS server address in your connections to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
