Amazon has made Alexa+ free on Fire TV, dropping the subscription requirement that previously stood between the AI assistant and anyone without a Prime membership. In an announcement published on 19 August, Amazon said the upgraded assistant is rolling out to all US customers with compatible Fire TV devices at no additional cost, and that eligible owners are switched over automatically, whether or not they pay Amazon anything.

What Alexa+ free on Fire TV actually covers
Alexa+ replaces the original Alexa’s keyword-matching voice search with a conversational one. Amazon’s example is asking for “Recommend me a top-rated thriller” and then narrowing it with a follow-up like “something newer” or “with a female lead”, instead of naming an exact title. The assistant also answers general questions about what is on screen, moves a Prime Video stream from one Fire TV device to another by voice, pulls up a Ring camera feed on the TV, and adjusts compatible smart lights and locks.
Amazon says the devices getting it are all current-generation Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and third-party sets with Alexa+ built in, naming Hisense and Panasonic. The company also states that customers talk to Alexa+ on Fire TV nearly two times more than they did with the original Alexa, and that they pick Alexa’s top recommendation over 40% more often than before.
What is still behind a subscription
This is the part worth reading carefully, because “free” is doing narrower work than the headline suggests. Amazon’s own page says a Prime membership or an Alexa+ Standard Plan subscription is still required for Alexa+ on Echo devices, and for a set of Fire TV features held back from the free tier: Alexa Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments, and advanced Home Modes for automating smart home devices.
So the free tier is conversational search, general questions, basic smart home voice control and personality settings. Anything that automates your home, or extends Alexa+ beyond the television, still costs money. Before this change, TechCrunch reported that Alexa+ cost $19.99 per month for anyone without a Prime membership — that price point is what has gone away for Fire TV, not the paid product itself.
Nobody was asked
Amazon’s own description of how the switch happens is this:
There’s no action required, no app to download, and no subscription to activate.
Read as convenience, that is a smooth upgrade. Read as consent, it is an opt-out that was never offered. A more capable, more conversational AI assistant is being switched on by default, with no consent step, on a device Amazon says is upgraded automatically — and the announcement does not describe any way to decline the upgrade or return to the older assistant.
The engagement figure deserves the same scepticism. Amazon presents “nearly two times more” conversations as evidence that people like Alexa+. It is equally a measure of how much more voice data is now flowing to Amazon’s servers from Fire TV owners who did not sign up for anything. Amazon has been expanding what it feeds its AI on other services too — we covered how Twitch began training Amazon’s AI on streamers’ content earlier this month.
It is also worth being clear about what free is for. Routines and Home Modes sitting just out of reach, one subscription away, is the standard shape of a funnel: give away the tier that builds the habit, charge for the tier the habit leads to.
Is it coming to India?
Amazon’s announcement covers the United States only. On availability elsewhere, the company says only that additional devices and regions may be added over time. No India date, no India pricing, and no commitment either way — Alexa+ has been rolling out market by market, with Canada and Australia already announced, so Fire TV owners in India should treat this as a rollout that has not reached them yet rather than one that has been ruled out. If your Fire TV Stick behaves exactly as it did yesterday, that is expected.
