Spotify is quietly testing a “Skip ahead” button that lets Premium subscribers bypass podcast ads with a single tap — a move that could reshape how the entire podcast industry makes money.
The feature, first reported by Podnews on August 4 and detailed further by Semafor, appears during ad breaks and sponsorship segments in select podcasts. It works only when the Spotify app is in the foreground and only for certain Premium accounts. Crucially, it skips ads sold by third-party networks like Acast and Audacy, but not ads sold directly by Spotify — creating a two-tiered system that conveniently favours Spotify’s own ad business.
How Spotify’s podcast ad skip button works
When a podcast ad or sponsorship message plays, a “Skip ahead” button appears on screen. Tap it, and you jump straight past the ad to the next segment of the episode. The ads are still technically delivered to your device — they just never reach your ears if you hit the button.
This is different from the existing 15-second skip. Instead of tapping forward repeatedly to guess where the ad ends, the button knows exactly where the content resumes. It also skips host-read sponsorship segments and creator mentions of Patreon or premium subscription offers — not just pre-roll or mid-roll ad insertions.
Spotify confirmed the test exists but downplayed its significance. “We regularly conduct tests at Spotify — some tests become permanent features,” a spokesperson told Semafor. “We’re exploring ways to make podcast listening more intuitive for Premium subscribers with the goal of helping listeners spend more time enjoying podcasts.”
Why podcast creators and advertisers are worried
The reaction from the podcast industry has been sharp. Tommy Vietor, co-founder of Crooked Media — one of the largest independent podcast networks — posted on X: “Very cool of @Spotify to try and destroy the podcast industry.”
The concern is straightforward. Advertisers pay premium rates for podcast ads precisely because they are hard to skip — unlike YouTube pre-rolls or banner ads, a host-read podcast sponsorship has historically been one of the few ad formats listeners actually hear. That reliability is what justifies podcast ad rates, which can run several times higher per impression than display ads.
If Spotify makes skipping effortless, those ads lose their value. Advertisers will pay less, and podcast creators — especially independent ones who rely on third-party ad networks — will earn less. Some in the industry have gone further, with one podcast ad company telling Podnews the practice could be considered “fraudulent,” since advertisers are charged for ads that listeners are simultaneously shown a way to avoid.
The real issue: Spotify protects its own ads
The most telling detail is what the skip button does not skip. Ads sold through Spotify’s own ad marketplace — Spotify Ad Studio and its programmatic offerings — are exempt. Only third-party ads from competing networks get the skip treatment.
This creates an obvious incentive for podcast creators to sell their ad inventory through Spotify rather than competitors. If your ads get skipped on Acast but not on Spotify’s own platform, the business case for using Spotify’s ad tools writes itself. It is a textbook platform play: degrade the competition’s product while improving your own, all under the banner of “user experience.”
For listeners, skippable ads sound like a clear win — and in the short term, it is. But if this feature kills independent ad-supported podcasting and pushes creators toward Spotify-exclusive deals and Spotify-sold ads, listeners end up with less choice and more platform lock-in. The same pattern played out with music on Spotify, where artists saw per-stream payouts crater as the platform consolidated power.
What happens next
Spotify has not said whether the feature will roll out widely or remain a limited test. Several major podcast networks have reportedly contacted Spotify to raise concerns, and some executives are discussing whether to actively steer listeners toward Apple Podcasts or other platforms in response.
For now, if you are a Spotify Premium subscriber, you may or may not see the skip button — the test appears to be limited to select accounts. If you do see it, enjoy the ad-free listening while it lasts. Just know that the podcasts you listen to might not survive the business model it creates.
