I’m sure you didn’t start this post to hear how good your site is, so here are a few things to consider.

Lose the popup begging the visitor for their email address. One thing that ruin any website are popups, especially repetitive ones. Popups and flashing graphics are very annoying. You’ve dedicated a prominent spot in the upper right hand corner of every page asking people to subscribe, that should be sufficient.

If you feel compelled to do so, at least give an option to turn off the popup if someone elects not to supply their email address. Your script has the option to close the window, but the popup will return in a short time.

There are a few websites that I go to that use scripts to constantly refresh the page, which is also annoying. If I want to refresh the page I know how to hit F5. Geez, why do people feel the need to control the user experience, even to the point of being annoying.

Scripts are generally a bad idea, and because of your scripts I have been using a no script add-on that disables all scripts on your site when I browse. It also comes in handy for other sites that have annoying scripts, so I can now pick and choose which sites to allow scripting.

What makes the internet great is anonymity and quality content. Instead of prissing around with all the fluff, increase the content and your site will grow.

I use Firefox along with the adblock and flashblock add-ons, so I don’t see the ads on your website when I browse and won’t be able to comment any further.

One more thing, you might want to consider the fact that many new users who visit your site will see the popup and immediately close the webpage figuring it is another annoying spam website. Also, I’m not in love with the toolbar on the bottom of the page, but at least it is small and unobtrusive.

Don’t take me wrong. You have a nice website with some interesting articles, but popups went out of style long ago.

Thank you mate for such a detailed view.

Regarding that popup, It is set to show only to new visitors and that too after a 90 seconds delay. IF you are a regular visitor, You wont see this popup at all. This popup is targetted at new users not regular ones.

Only thing as this popup is based on cookie, so it will appear again if you clear your cookies or change your browser from time to time.

Regarding the toolbar below, It adds some functionality to the website like sharing something with just a drag or drop. It is there as many guys asked me for something like this. Similar toolbar you can find on some big sites like Mashable.com.

Anyway, I would try my best to see what can be done with that popup issue and how it can be made less obtrusive. Point well taken :P

**Lose the popup begging the visitor for their email address**

I have to agree on this as I’ve already subscribed, it does get a bit annoying.

**A little too much Norton hate in the forum for me though..**

Avinash doesn’t stop people from saying good things about a product or bad, the bad is an opinion just as the good, else it’s called *Censoring*. If you do like Norton, then why not stick up for it with a sensible opinion or argument? So in other words, you don’t like the fact the weight is against Norton, so you suggest what? That whoever is posting MUST like it or censor what we feel about it? That would mean forcing the majority to either not state something about it or to falsly say they like it? If it was an “I love Norton” situation, I can 100% guarantee you would not have stated that.

As far as the rest of the forum, I haven’t encountered anything that would make me say anything is wrong with it and so far Avinash has been great in allowing our freedoms compared to other forums and such but yet, has made for a great scenario where people act like grownups and not children so yep, so far I think it’s spot on with the exception of the pop up lol.

lol..What “censoring” are claiming I’m advocating? Bit of a leap, don’t you think?

Oh, and Norton faired very exceptionally well in the tests Raymond thru at security vendors. Me thinks you’re behind the times..

**lol..What “censoring” are claiming I’m advocating? Bit of a leap, don’t you think?**

What I’m asking is, if you feel there is too much Norton hate, what do YOU propose to do then? Obviously you have an issue with this don’t you? How do you propose to stop all this “supposed” Norton hate that is going on there? That would only mean one thing, in order to not have all the supposed hate of Norton, it would mean censoring our opinions on a product , plain and simple. Of all the posts in the forum, there are not an over abundance of Norton hate topics or posts, so methinks it’s you who are leaping. If there was a whole thread dedicated to Norton hate, then yes, it would be a bit over the top but not a handful of user opinions. Obviously you like Norton, which is fine but once again out of the NUMEROUS posts and threads, you chose the ones that mention Norton.

Behind the times? Hardly. BTW, let’s not assume we all know who er… Raymond? is. Do you mean Raymondcc? If so, it’s tested on XP SP3 , talk about behind the times LOL. And it according to the stats there, it’s still running the same as in other tests, about the mid 60%, not to mention every anti virus is going to block something the other won’t. So Norton blocked something, good, now if it would work on the other stuff. And another thing, there are far more professional tests done than what Raymond can accomplish not to mention REAL LIFE experience with these products and infections. 90% of the computers I get in that have any type of Norton are infected to the till and myself along with many others who actually have to work with it, not read a blog and think I’m a pro, know how bad Norton can be. So no, I am not behind the times, I am running and working with Windows 7 and in many cases, Vista, and only a few XP since, er… XP is getting quite old now.

It seems I need to do a detailed post on why the Popup is there putting my viewpoint or may be my side of the story.

Now regarding Norton hate and Forum, As Paul ( PChammer ) pointed out, I have never put any limitations or restrictions on the freedom of speech or opinion in the forum. Regular members may have felt that one time or the other.

Its not like I hate norton or someone else does. Every time Norton releases a new version, I am the first to try it on even many starting from beta stage till final release. The comments from my side are based on that personal experience and I can tel you , i will be testing it again.

I do know many guys love norton and all of them are free to post their opinions either on the forum or blog here. But it doesnt mean that I will stop people from talking whats negative or bad with Norton or any other product. This is a free forum and it will be always. :)

Also, except norton there are loads of post on the forum and blog. You can have a look and as Paul said, there is no thread thats for norton hate stuff. Its just the opinion of members thats coming in between some posts. :P

This post shouldn’t get a discussion post for Norton products. I would ask you guys to discus that at the Forum.

Ok, I got one. When looking in threads, through posts and such, I wish there was a “view new posts” on the page. It seems to only be on the main page so we end up having to go back to the main page to view new posts. Tis no big deal of course and perhaps it’s set that way for a reason.

Well, Its one of the core features of PHPBB forum software and hence its only available on main page.

Still I will try to do some code hacking if possible and try to move it to every pages, but not sure whether I would be able to do it as I am not that good in coding. Still I will try. :)

Update :-

It seems I was able to hack the code obviously with a bit of help from google and phpbb community. Now the “view new posts” is on every page mate.

Just check it out. :P

Hey avi, you are going still and strong, a constant growth rate. Well i suggest you to improve the site speed some more. You can try compressing the css code and also by compressing the html.
