Previous editions of Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security were built from two separate code bases,With this release, Symantec has brought the two together into a single code base. All of the innovations that make Norton Internet Security 2009 fast and lightweight are now part of Norton 360. It should install in under a minute, like NIS 2009, even though it includes more features.
Norton 360 won’t include a CPU meter on its main screen the way NIS 2009 does, but it will run all tasks during idle time. Norton Insight component, which speeds malware scanning by skipping files known to be safe. And it will automatically switch to silent mode if it detects that a game, presentation, or other full-screen program is running. Anti-malware protection will stay up to date with “pulse updates” every few minutes.

This edition marks the third generation of Symantec’s backup technology. “You’ll see that it’s starting to become much more full-featured, like a standalone backup client,” ütles ta.
The new backup system can handle files on USB keys and other removable drives, and it allows users to manage the file types associated with backup categories. A new tabbed user interface makes it easier to manage. Users can now restore files on another PC that doesn’t have Norton 360 using the new Portable Restore feature. And restoring files from online backup is simplified by the introduction of a virtual drive representing each backup set.
Norton 360 includes a set of utilities to tune up system performance. This edition adds a startup manager that lets the user easily disable and re-enable programs that launch at startup and run in the background, taking up system resources. There’s also an option to delay a startup program’s launch, so it doesn’t add to the traffic jam at boot time. And the diagnostic and monthly reports will include information about what programs were added to the startup sequence.
A final release is expected in the first quarter of 2009. The basic Norton 360 package will include 2 Gbytes of online backup and cost $79.99 (direct). The $99.99 Premier edition includes 25 GB of online backup. Both include licenses to install on three PCs.
